I have the honour to inform Your Lordship

that I have had under consideration the practice prevailing in this Colony for the examination of candidates for admission as Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Hongkong. The procedure is governed by section 11 of Ordinmce No. 1 of 1871 and thẹ fee payable to each examiner has hitherto been 350. On a recent occasion, however, when an examination was held a sum of $300 was asked by certain Solicitors who were approached, and eventually a fee of $100 to each examiner was arranged.

It seem to me a somewhat remarkable arrangement that the taxpayers of the Colony should be charged with such heavy expenses in order to secure the rather doubtful advantage of having an additional practising Solicitor and I should be glad to be informed what is the practice in other Colonies with regard to the payment of the fees of examiners

in such cases.
